Afterlife Quotes (37) Spiritual Sayings

Summary: Definition of Afterlife. The afterlife (also referred to as life after death or the hereafter) is the concept of a realm, or the realm itself (whether physical or transcendental), in which an essential part of an individual's identity or consciousness continues to exist after the death of the body. According to various ideas about the afterlife, the essential aspect of the individual that lives on after death may be some partial element, or the entire soul or spirit, of an individual, which carries with it and may confer personal identity or, on the contrary, may not, as in Indian nirvana. Belief in an afterlife, which may be naturalistic or supernatural, is in contrast to the belief in oblivion after death.

My view of the afterlife is that it's made of different levels, depending on how spiritual a life we live.
~ John Edward

I don't know anything about the afterlife because I haven't been there yet.
~ Marina Abramovic

Is death the last sleep? No, it is the last and final awakening.
~ Walter Scott

In sorrow we must go, but not in despair. Behold! we are not bound for ever to the circles of the world, and beyond them is more than memory.
~ J. R. R. Tolkien

For in that sleep of death what dreams may come.
~ William Shakespeare

A horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.
~ Rossiter W. Raymond

I look upon death to be as necessary to our constitution as sleep. We shall rise refreshed in the morning.

~ Rumi

Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting...
~ William Wordsworth

The golden age is before us, not behind us.
~ William Shakespeare

We are called to be architects of the future, not its victims.
~ R. Buckminster Fuller

If anyone can show me one example in the history of the world of a single spiritual person who has been able to show either empirically or logically the existence of a higher power with any consciousness or interest in the human race or ability to punish or reward humans for their moral choices or that there is any reason other than fear to believe in any version of an afterlife, I will give you my piano, one of my legs and my wife.
~ Tim Minchin

Must in death your daylight finish? My sun sets to rise again.
~ Robert Browning

If you do not prepare now for the Afterlife, then when will you do so?
~ Al-Ghazali

I will take my leave of you, but I will remember you always because you are the ones who encouraged me and lifted me up high. I will remember you forever, forever, even in the afterlife.

Perhaps immortality is a gift of heaven rather than the result of some human effort.
~ Wang Yangming

Divine Wisdom, intending to detain us some time on earth, has done well to cover with a veil the prospect of the life to come; for if our sight could clearly distinguish the opposite bank, who would remain on this tempestuous coast of time?

A prevalent fallacy is the assumption that a proof of an afterlife would also be a proof of the existence of a deity. This is far from being the case. If, as I hold, there is no good reason to believe that a god either created or presides over this world, there is equally no good reason to believe that a god created or presides over the next world, on the unlikely supposition that such a thing exists.
~ A.J. Ayer

I believe there's more than this-that maybe when we die our brains conjure up some kind of shutdown experience, and that's what people try to sum up as the afterlife. Something else is going to happen and it's going to be crazy and confusing and weird, and we probably won't know what it's all about. It'll just be another place where we're trying to understand why we exist at all.
~ Flying Lotus

I shall venture to affirm, that there never was a popular religion, which represented the state of departed souls in such a light,as would render it eligible for human kind, that there should be such a state. These fine models of religion are the mere product of philosophy. For as death lies between the eye and the prospect of futurity, that event is so shocking to nature, that it must throw a gloom on all the regions which lie beyond it; and suggest to the generality of mankind the idea of Cerberus and Furies; devils, and torrents of fire and brimstone.
~ David Hume

I have mummy truths to tell
Whereat the living mock,
Though not for sober ear,
For maybe all that hear
Should laugh and weep an hour upon the clock.
~ William Butler Yeats

Work for your terrestrial life in proportion to your location in it, and work for your afterlife in proportion to your eternity in it.
~ Al-Ghazali

Asked whether or not he believed in an afterlife, Thoreau quipped, "One world at a time."
~ Henry David Thoreau

Nirvana is this moment seen directly. There is no where else than here. The only gate is now. The only doorway is your own body and mind. There’s nowhere to go. There’s nothing else to be. There’s no destination. It’s not something to aim for in the afterlife. It’s simply the quality of this moment.
~ Gautama Buddha
